    EPIRB Battery Replacement | Shore Based Maintenance Service

    Shore Based Maintenance (SBM) ensures your EPIRB is always ready to operate correctly in case of emergency. Periodic maintenance is legally required and essential to guarantee safety, reliability, and compliance with international standards.

    What it is

    Shore Based Maintenance (SBM) is the mandatory periodic maintenance of your EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon).
    It includes battery replacement and a series of technical checks specified by IMO MSC/Circ.1039, performed exclusively at authorized service centers.

    When it should be performed

    In Italy, SBM must be carried out:
    • every 4 years from the production date or the last recorded maintenance;
    after any activation of the EPIRB, even accidental.

    International IMO guidelines set a maximum interval of 5 years, but each country may apply stricter rules.
    Italy, for example, has adopted a shorter interval to ensure a higher level of safety. Always check the regulations of your vessel’s flag state.

    What the service includes

    Our authorized service center (ACR, Ocean Signal, GME) performs Shore Based Maintenance using original spare parts and issues the mandatory SBM Certificate to be kept onboard.

    The service includes:
    • battery and HRU (Hydrostatic Release Unit) replacement if expired;
    • waterproofing checks;
    • functional tests in a Faraday cage (transmission frequency check, transmitted data integrity, GPS verification);
    • strobe light inspection;
    • general inspection of housing, antenna, and activators.

    How our service works

    The service is designed to minimize downtime and simplify management for the vessel owner.

    - Submit Service Request

    Send us your service request: you can easily do this via the dedicated online form or by contacting us directly. We will respond quickly with the estimated time and cost for the service.

    - Collection

    Once the quote is accepted, we organize the pickup via courier (this service is available only within Italy). Simply pack the device with all its parts.

    - Processing

    The EPIRB enters the maintenance cycle at our authorized service center. Any issues or discrepancies compared to the quote will be communicated promptly. For discontinued models, we carefully evaluate in advance the possibility of performing the service, reporting any limitations or special conditions.

    - Return

    Once the maintenance is completed and payment is processed, the EPIRB is returned via courier. On request, a priority service or direct delivery to port authorities can be arranged to minimize downtime.
